On the footsteps of the Siberian Tiger

06 – 17 February 2027

2 SPACES AVAILABLE

In the northeastern regions of China, at the border with Russia and North Korea, within the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, live around 100 Siberian Tigers and 100 Amur Leopards.

Both of these great felines, for years on the brink of extinction, are now protected and are slowly recovering. Visiting the snowy steppes of these regions in winter is a unique experience that can offer some wonderful surprises, such as discovering the Korean cultural enclave with its traditional villages, visiting the Harbin Ice Sculpture Festival, and reaching the remote and spectacular mountainous and volcanic region of Changbaishan on the border with North Korea. The main goal of our adventure, however, will be to encounter the wildlife of these lands, particularly the Siberian tigers. We will also have the opportunity to observe various birds of prey, such as the Steller's Sea Eagle, the White-tailed Eagle, and the Cinereous Vulture in their natural habitat, as well as the elegant mating dances of the Red-Crowned Cranes in the Zhalong reserve. Observing Siberian Tigers in the wild is virtually impossible, but they can be seen and photographed in a natural setting at some rescue centers, where they roam freely within a large enclosed space. We can travel to this area in special vehicles. This is an exclusive and luxury adventure for our group of up to 15 people.

08 February
After breakfast, a slow and exciting raft ride awaits us along a river surrounded by surreal frost-covered forests. We’ll experience the thrill of navigating relatively warm waters due to geothermal activity, which, when combined with frigid air, forms frost that covers the trees like a blanket, creating a fairytale atmosphere.
Later, we’ll move on to the city of Jilin.
Overnight at Hotel***.

09 February
Before dawn, when the light is best, we’ll set out to reach Rime Island in the Songhua River. In winter, the warm steam from the river tends to freeze on the tree branches along its banks, creating delicate ice crystals that transform the river landscape into a fairytale. This phenomenon isn’t always guaranteed, but the time of our visit coincides with when it’s most common.
After the excursion, we’ll head east, specifically toward Yanji, the cultural hub of the Korean ethnic minority in China.
Overnight at Hotel Radisson RED Jilin City or similar****.

10 February
In the morning, we’ll visit the Chinese-Korean Ethnic Village of Yanji, where traditional architecture and daily life clearly demonstrate the distinctive culture of the Korean community in northeastern China. We’ll then head to Tumen, where we’ll travel along the natural border formed by the Tumen River, observing the landscapes overlooking North Korea from designated vantage points.

Early in the morning, we’ll visit a site where we’ll find a significant concentration of large birds of prey, which can be observed and photographed under very favorable conditions. We’ll observe Steller’s Sea Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, and Cinereous Vulture, iconic winter birds of prey in northeastern China.
In the afternoon, we’ll reach the Fangchuan Scenic Area, famous for its vantage point offering panoramic views of China, Russia, and North Korea.
After the visit, we’ll return to Hunchun.
Overnight at Hotel Hunchun Ethnic Garden International or similar*****.

12 February
After breakfast, we’ll leave Hunchun, quickly entering protected areas and national parks.
Passing through wooded hills, icy rivers, and remote areas, we’ll experience the natural environment in which Siberian tigers and Amur leopards roam undisturbed. These felines’ historical range extended across much of northeastern China, but has shrunk, and they now live primarily in parts of Russia. With the establishment of the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, conservation efforts are underway to create suitable habitats and routes for these animals’ return to the area. In addition to the big cats, the temperate broadleaf forests, dominated by oak, maple, and birch, provide refuge for various birds and mammals, such as the Sika Deer and the Siberian Musk Deer, a curious and rare primitive animal similar to a small deer, but lacking antlers and equipped with tusks.
In the late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Hengdaohezi, a historic city known for its Russian-style architecture and ancient railway tradition.
Overnight at Hotel Hengdao Riverside Fanghua or similar***.

13 February
This morning we’ll visit the Hengdaohezi Siberian Tiger Park, one of the most important tiger conservation and breeding centers in Northeast China. Here, we’ll focus on photography and observing Siberian Tigers roaming freely in a semi-natural enclosed environment, which we’ll reach in special vehicles especially reserved for our group.
After the visit, we’ll head to Harbin, where in the late afternoon and evening, we’ll explore the spectacular Harbin Ice and Snow World, famous for its illuminated ice castles and enormous ice sculptures.

In the afternoon, we’ll reach Qiqihar.
Overnight at Hotel Platinum Qiqihar Wanda Plaza Branch or similar*****.

16 February
The morning will be dedicated to the Zhalong Nature Preserve. In winter, when the wetlands freeze over and the landscape becomes austere, birds are fewer in number, many having migrated. What remains are the robust and elegant Red-crowned Cranes, with their magical mating dances, the White-naped Cranes, and the Oriental Stork; as well as some birds of prey, such as the Eurasian Sparrowhawk and the Eurasian Eagle Owl, who winter here.
In the afternoon, we will reach Harbin.
