Full day dedicated to the Rotorua region and in particular to lake Taupo passing through Wai-o-tapu and Huka Falls. The area is famous throughout the world for its steaming hot springs, bubbling mud pools and geysers; and for the Maori culture, both past and present. Approaching Taupō, we will cross the Wairakei park, which is home to the Craters of the Moon and the Wairakei Terraces, as well as Huka Falls. This morning we have an exciting helicopter tour. We will have the unique opportunity to experience volcanic activity from the sky as we fly over the active crater of the marine volcano Whakaari on remote White Island, before landing on the now dormant but extremely spectacular summit of Mt Tarawera. Both of these volcanoes are significant, Whakaari for its devastating eruption in 2019 and Mt Tarawera for the much larger eruption in 1886, thought to be the largest in living memory in New Zealand. Further spectacular aerial views include the Waimangu volcanic valley and the beautiful crater lakes.
We will then enjoy a short walk through the Redwoods or Blue and Green Lakes before visiting the National Kiwi Hatchery, where we will discover the iconic Kiwis. This guided experience is a truly unique opportunity to learn about the conservation program as we join the team in a staff-only area, where we will learn about hatching and raising chicks. 100% of the funds we pay for this tour go to the National Kiwi Recovery Trust.
We will then visit the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute, Rotowhio Pā.
A delicious Māori dinner with a folk show awaits us. Te Pō begins with a seafood buffet, local cuisine and authentic Māori hāngī dishes. After dinner, we will experience the exciting pōhiri (welcome ceremony) at the beautiful meeting house, Te Aronui a Rua. We may enjoy the beauty and power of traditional waiata (chants), mōteatea (songs), poi and haka. We will end the day in the geothermal valley of Te Whakarewarewa, for a hot chocolate overlooking the spectacularly lit Pōhutu geyser.
