SEPTEMBER 2020: ALASKA AND CANADA, THE GOLD RUSH

 

02 – 13 September 2020

Special departure 12 people maximum, on the footstep of the gold miners that in the XIX century explored the wild Alaska, Klondike and Yukon searching for the precious metal. From Juneau, the capital of Alaska in the south-east, we will drive through mythical places like the White Pass, Whitehorse, Dawson, the Yukon River, Fairbanks, Denali Park and finish in Anchorage. On this unique adventure we will have the opportunity to travel on board trains, buses, boats and airplanes, crossing some of the most remote lands of the planet among endless glaciers and spectacular mountains. We will visit two national parks, Glacier Bay and Denali, we will sail on a paddle boat and visit a mine.

PROGRAM

 

02   September
Arrival in Juneau, the capital of Alaska. The town of about 30 thousand inhabitants is located in the southeastern extremity of the state. Founded in 1881 after the gold was discovered nearby, it is the ideal starting point for a journey on the footsteps of the gold diggers. Mount Juneau, Mount Roberts and the Gastineau Channel, a 30-km-long stretch of sea surround the city together with Douglas Island, the view and scenery are wonderful.

03   September
Full day at to the discovery of the Tracy Arm Fjord. On board a small boat we will reach this spectacular fjord, a combination of mountains, waterfalls, wild animals, glaciers and icebergs, located about 45 miles south of Juneau. The front of the Sawyer glacier is just over half a mile wide, once we get here the engines will be turned off so we can hear the crackling of the ice and admire the spectacular panorama without noise waiting the glacier calving. The Sawyer glacier is very active and is home of the largest icebergs in Alaska.
The floating icebergs are surrounded by mountain peaks reaching 2000 meters. If the main objective of the cruise is the fjord and the glacier, wildlife is a further purpose and we will be looking for mountain goats, whales, bears, seals and birds.

04   September

After breakfast we will embark on the Alaska Marine Highway ferry sailing through the Chilkoot Inlet to Skagway, this small settlement is the gateway to the Klondike, the path followed by gold miners. During the journey we will have the opportunity to enjoy the fantastic views of the wild Alaska and if we are lucky to meet some of its inhabitants, such as the Humpback Whales.

05  September
Free time to explore the town of Skagway, late in the morning the old train will bring us through the legendary White Pass and to Whitehorse. Built in 1898 during the Klondike gold rush, the White Pass and the Yukon Route are an engineering marvel that involved thousands of workers forced to cope with the harsh climate and overcome the difficulties given by the geography of the territory. The railway passes through dramatic landscapes, glaciers and gorges; waterfalls, tunnels and bridges that make it one of the most spectacular in the world. In a small part of it we will overcome about 1000 meters in altitude in just 20 miles!

06   September
Free time to explore Whitehorse, capital of Yukon, the city has about 25.000 inhabitants. Whitehorse is a must for those who drive the Alaska Highway and the first taste of the Yukon for visitors arriving by plane.
Early afternoon flight to Dawson City, arrival and transfer to the hotel.

07   September
In Dawson City we will try to learn as much as possible about the gold fever by visiting the city museum and then the Jack London Museum. We will also enjoy a guided tour of the city.
Dinner and evening in pure Klondike style at the Diamond Tooth Gerties, a casino like no other is run by the Klondike Visitors Association and all earnings are reinvested in the community.
We will live a night at the saloon just like the pioneers, casino games, nostalgic songs and three different shows inspired by Cancan, it will be a night in the city that we will not soon forget!

08   September
Today we will drive aboard a small public bus along the Taylor Highway and then the Alaska Highway from Yukon to Alaska, and more precisely to Fairbanks, where in 1902 the first gold was found in the area. We will cross uninhabited and boundless territories where encounters with other people are quite rare.

09   September
In the morning the traditional paddle boat awaits us for an exciting cruise on the great rivers of Alaska! During the navigation we will meet a family that has transformed the Alaskan rivers into a lifestyle for five generations. We will see a small seaplane take off right next to the boat, we will visit the house and the chennel of the four-time winner of Iditarod Susan Butcher and we will see her sled dogs in action. We will be immersed in the ancient Indian Athabascan culture when our native Alaska guides take us on a tour of the Chena Indian Village.
After the cruise we will join the Binkley family for a trip through the history of gold mining in Alaska at Gold Dredge 8. We will visit the Trans Alaska Pipeline and see a presentation on its construction and operation. We will then board a replica of the Tanana Valley narrow-gauge railway and listen to the conductor telling stories about the gold rush. The journey by train will take us to the Gold Dredge 8 where we can see firsthand how the dredger worked in the golden mines and attend a brief but instructive course on gold. We can also try our luck and look for the gold nuggets and we will find them, the Binkley family guarantees! We will finally enjoy coffee and freshly baked cookies in the gift shop while our gold is weighed, then we will return to the station.

10   September
After breakfast we will go to the train station and board the train that will take us from Fairbanks to Denali Park, a luxurious convoy with the cars with a transparent roof allowing us to enjoy the great panorama.
We will arrive at our destination in the late afternoon.

11   September
Full day to explore the pristine nature of Denali Park on board a bus accompanied by an experienced naturalist. We will have the chance to see some of the magnificent creatures that live here like Brown and Black Bears, Caribou, Foxes or Elk. We will cross the tundra, the endless forests and the breathtaking landscapes of the Denali in this unforgettable adventure along the Park Road for more than 50 miles before returning. (Snack included)

12   September
After breakfast we will go to the train station to board the train again, this time from the Denali Park to Anchorage, a luxurious convoy with the cars with a transparent roof allowing us to enjoy the great panorama.
We will arrive at your destination in the late afternoon.

13   September

Flight home (not included).
